what are some reasons why riding with no protective gear is good?
im writing an editorial for my english class and i chose motorcycle protective gear, ive got a ton of reasons why it is good to wear gear but it seems like common sense to wear it and i can’t think of any.

greater flexibility. easier to run from the cops. free.
It’s comfortable, and it’s nice to show off the arms for the ladies lol. I always wear a helmet though.
It doesn`t look embarrassing.
the pros totally outweight the cons in this example. the other answers have a few small cons though
well wearing a helmet could give you less of a vision of the road and what is on the side of the road
People who don’t wear proper protective gear usually use the following arguments:
1. It’s my personal choice.
2. I feel freer and less restricted.
3. I can see better without a helmet on.
4. Its too hot.
And you know, it is their personal choice. I think it’s a dumb one, but if they have good health insurance and a nice burial plot, they are adults and have the right to make their own decisions.
Doesn’t mean I agree with them at all, I think their reasoning is weak, but that’s my opinion. I’m as free to make my own decisions as they are.
to help weed out stupid people … LOL
raise the average IQ … LOL
provide job security to hospital personnel … LOL
now on a serious note … honestly, I can think of very few GOOD reasons to NOT wear protective gear … that would be a matter of choice for each individual rider to make. to me the pros drastically outweigh the cons of wearing versus not wearing protective gear.
maybe if you don’t wear a helmet, you can hear better.
maybe if you don’t wear protective gear, you have better flexibility.
maybe if you don’t wear protective gear it might be more comfortable.
you really only need protective gear when you have an accident … notice I said when… and you never know “when” is…
but it comes down to choice really … I will choose to always wear appropriate protective gear as the older I get, the slower I am to heal “when” happens. I’ve spent my own fair share in the ER, doctors offices, wearing bandages, etc.
its not good
it’s a choice people make … but really there aren’t any good reasons when the need arises.
LOL at weed out stupid people…
This is a good question.
But I am unable to help. I just can’t think of a reason other than the some of the riding gear being cost prohibitive.
I can see no reason ever not to wear a helmet. Ever. The notion it blocks visibility is so untrue. Compare the visibility that is afforded to a motorcyclist compared to a car driver. So many obstructions in a car. I have missed seeing a car merging onto the highway due to the rear view mirror.
Not wearing a jacket? Well in hot weather a case can be made that it is uncomfortable riding in 90 plus degrees F wearing a jacket. While that is fairly true, the fact remains it is uncomfortable riding in hot weather no matter what you are wearing. Riding in that kind of heat is like riding into a running hair dryer. But keeping the sun off your arms will improve comfort in hot and sunny riding conditions. I wear a Joe Rocket Phoenix mesh jacket in yellow. Lighter colors do not absorb heat as well as the dark colors, especially black.
Need to cover your hands also during summer weather. Same thing applies when keeping the sun off your skin.
Wearing tennis shoes can be seen as OK by many. Will afford protection from road grit and bugs. But you will have many regrets for your choice of foot wear if you go down. I went down last year after hitting a dog. After a precautionary trip to the hospital and numerous x-rays, I was allowed off the back board. Where upon I looked down at my boots to see the toes were all scuffed and abraded. I never felt a thing due to the steel toe in my boots.
Hope this offers a perspective on safety equipment.
Good Luck
“Personal choice”, is the usual battle cry of those who are against helmet laws. Now I know protective gear such as riding pants, jackets, and gloves are not mandated by the states-yet. So I’ll stick with the helmet issue.
The worst case scenario, in my opinion, is not dying in a motorcycle accident, but rather to become a vegetable from a head injury, unable to do anything for ones self without help from someone else. All for the lack of some basic riding gear, a helmet, but wearing a helmet is no guarantee of survival either.
WARNING, his link is graffic!!!
It may well be, or should be, an individuals option to choose, but what of those people in the riders life who depend on this person to earn money and pay the families bills, to raise the kids, and to fulfill obligations to family, friends, and community. These are the people never thought of when many “choose”.
Be it riding gear or riding style, choose wisely and…
Ride Safe
After a few moments of thinking, I found one good reason not to wear protective gear:
People who ride without protective gear help people in need of organs.
2 words:
“Organ Donations”
Chicks dig scars.
Brain injuries are great. Everyday you meet new people!
Wheelchairs are more comfortable than they look.
When the guy in the pickup in front of you spits out the window, it’s like a cool refreshing shower. Tobacco flavored if your lucky!
Because that left turning cager up ahead may see your rippling chest muscles and not pull in front of you.
Because the organ donor pool is far too small.
Casts and bandages are more comfortable than protective gear.Wheelchair seats are more comfortable than motorcycle seats anyway,
Good question: I’m a member of ABATE, the only protective gear I don’t wear, is a helmet. I wear a good pair of riding glasses, leather jacket, gloves, boots, heavy jeans and chaps when needed. I do own a helmet and wear it when it rains, to keep my head dry and warm. A helmet is the only protective gear, that is fairly worthless. A helmet will not protect you above 35 MPH, from almost anything. It will stop a bug or a very small rock, below 40 or 45 MPH. The wind noise is worse with a helmet. You can’t hear, what’s going on around you, very bad. If you look at the raw crash data, a helmet would have save only a few lives. Most deaths were due to body trauma, not head.
In 32 years of riding, I’ve put my bike down three times. The only time I hit my head, was with a helmet on. It was also the only time, I got hurt. The debate is not weather or not, wearing protective gear is good. But how good is it really.
It is odd that people who wear jackets, gloves, boots, chaps and jeans, then make extravagantly inaccurate claims about helmets, exactly which part of their body do they think will kill them if it is crushed – hand(s), feet, leg(s), arm(s), spine – on the other hand it does make the organ harvest a cleaner affair.
The number of times I have read that a full-face helmet will snap your neck or the claim that “if I had been wearing a helmet I would have died” or “if I hadn’t been wearing a helmet I wouldn’t have been hurt” and memorably “if you wear a helmet and crash (unconscious) into a ditch you could drown” makes me wonder.
The best I can come up is that, like the steering wheel spike and no seat belt will cause drivers to be far more careful and considerate, riding with no protective gear would force riders to go slower and be more careful – the whittling down of the failures would, in a corruption of Darwinism, strengthen the gene pool.
Common sense, overburdened health services and bereaved tax-paying families would point out that this means motorcycling should be banned overnight.
If you put at the top of the protective tree the professional racer (someone who is more likely to come off at high speed than any other rider – and, yes, it is a lot safer on a track than with heavier traffic) there are very few who will spend the time to put on a full one-piece leather suit, boots, gloves and helmet every time they go for a ride – I know I don’t.
i for 1, have been in a wreck wearing a beanie and was told that if i was wearing a heavier full faced helmet, i’d be dead or a quadriplegic. and my head did hit the pavement hard, the beanie had the skids to show it, and it split inside, so i wouldn’t ever go without a helmet all together or it might have been the same case.
there aren’t any other benefits i can think of from skipping any other safety items like goggles, boots, gloves, leathers.
i do still wear a full faced helmet in cooler weather knowing its more dangerous, but thats my choice, same as i feel it should be my choice to go without a helmet all together if thats what i’d like. i have had a warning for pulling my bike around the block with no helmet just to garage it, and feel thats crap
Thank you, Tim for pointing out the consideration of drivers.
I usually argue that using the word “responsibilty”.
They are directly related.
It’s a matter of choice. Let those that ride decide!
