I am a home DIYer with a ton of power and hand tools. I do not have a heated garage. I take good care of my tools, but am concerned about the temperature fluctuations, cold weather and moisture damaging the tools. Should I insulate and heat my garage ASAP?

  1. No. Cold won’t hurt power or hand tools. I’ve lived in a colder climate than PA for 30 years with no tool problems in my frosty winter garage.

  2. Moisture is a bigger problem with tools than seasonal temperatures.

With most tools, as long as they are stored in a dry location, you’ll be fine. You can purchase small silica gel packs to toss in the container/drawer to absorb any moisture too.

The only real concern with cold temps would be the tools that have grease/oil in them. You’d want to let them warm up to room temperature before using them. This would include most power tools. So just plan ahead, and bring them in the night before you need them.

Try to avoid setting metal tools/containers directly on concrete – they’ll rust.

You’ll want to keep your paints and glues from freezing. Once they’ve been exposed to freezing temps, they’re worthless, the chemical composition breaks down.

Of course, if you’re going to be working in the garage all winter, it would be nice to have it insulated and heated, hehehe.

Oh, one more tip – for those of us who store extra motor oil out in the cold – let it warm up before pouring it into a hot engine – it can crack the engine block.

    Good Luck
