We lose power often in our town (basically every time there is bad weather) and we are tired of everything getting spoiled so we are thinking of getting a generator.

Anyone know the best type to get? How much they generally cost?

I guess we just need one that would back of the fridge and some lights (doesn’t need to power the whole house because when we move we want to be able to take it).

Any advice on generators is appreciated!
Yeah it would have to be less than $1000, we can’t afford anything too expensive.

We can hook it up ourselves or do we need an electrician?

  1. Depends on how fancy you want to get. If you want automatic changeover, an average size for an average home may run eight to ten thousand dollars. If you want manual changeover, it will be less, and you can choose what portion of the home gets the generator power. If you want a generator you have to hook up yourself, and it just sits on your back deck, you can get out for less than one thousand. Hope that helps. Oh, Generac is a good name. They make both natural gas models, and regular fuel models.

  2. I have a 7500K Generac. Home Depot sells them for under $1000.00. They come with a special extension cord that lets you hook up at least three items. You can use another cord and hook up more. Mine is gas. You keep it outside. I run my cord through the doggie door when I need it. They are very simple. You can probably use a smaller unit for what you want. But get the largest you can afford. Mine is an electric start. You just press a button.

  3. If money is not a problem for you then getting a automatic unit will be quite expensive but it will automaticlly kick in when the power goes out and they usualyl have enough power to keep everything in the house running ( within reason) for instance not your hot tub, electric saunas, pool filters and the like. These units will be well over $ 10,000 will be powered by diesel or better yet natural gas if its available in your area.

Now to the type I have. I purchased a 5000 watt generator for around $600. some large size cable, ends to fit the cable, and a 60 amp switch box. If the power goes out. I have a check list of what to do. first you turn off the main breaker to the house. Then turn off all the individual circuit breakers to the house. The gen cable is connected to one side of the 60 amp box and the other side goes to the main bus of the panel. (220V) Start the generator and plug the cord to the 60 amp breaker into the 220V receptical on the gen turn on the switch on the 60 amp breaker box and this powers up your panel, then turn on the circuits you want like fridge freezer furnace and perhaps a few lights.
Watch the neighbours or streetlights and when the power is back on you must kill the generator, unhook the cable and turn the 60 amp breaker box off. Then turn your main power breaker and circuit breakers back on and your back to normal.
One note if under normal conditions you turn on the 60 amp breaker box it will engergize the generator power cable to 220V at 100 amps so dont do this. I have a warning sign on mine.
This is a bit long winded but the cost is minimal and it works great.

  4. yes the higher wattage rating the generator is the better and yeah you can pretty much wire it yourself, but what you need to make sure that you do first, above anything in the world is to turn off your main breaker, because if you dont turn it off and you have the generator on and the city power comes back up your going to mess some stuff up really bad.remember if connecting generator to house turn off main breaker,so you dont blow anything up. and make sure to wire into the load side of the breaker that way when city power comes back on you can still take it off without getting shocked

  5. You can often purchase a used portable generator for a reasonable price. Check your local Kijiji classifieds. The size of generator required depends on the items you will be powering. If you have a deep well pump don’t consider anything less than 5kW.

If you plan on getting a transfer panel it should be installed by a qualified electrician.
